Zero-Touch Service Technology for NAS
inXtron innovates with introduction of Zero-Touch Service Technology for NAS

Taipei, Taiwan, Feb 4, 2010 / Even the recent economic recession has not been able to hold back the rise of the digital home; a home where digital content is shared throughout the home using different media devices. In light of this digital home trend, there is a huge demand for products, such as NAS and home servers, that provide users a way to easily centralize, store, and access their digital content. According to ABI Research, sales of consumer electronics devices that can integrate with home networks are set to exceed US$243 billion by 2012.

One issue that is of concern to digital home electronics companies and consumers is the rapidly changing technologies. Often NAS and similar devices are dependent on 3rd party software from several different companies, such as BitTorrent and need to work with a wide-array of products and software, such as Apple’s ever-evolving "i" products, including i-phones and i-pods. When new features are added or technology changes occur companies have to allocate substantial time and resources to creating new software solutions, updating firmware, and informing customers.

Often customers think that when they send back a NAS device that isn’t working properly, it is because there is a hardware issue. In fact, this isn’t the case. inXtron’s CEO, Tommy Chen explains, "We have found time and time again the problem inevitably is not hardware related, but is software related; either the software is the wrong version or perhaps the user never downloaded a bug-fix. Traditionally, discovering this sort of software issue wastes a lot of time and money and is what we want to solve."

In order to address this gap between product and technology, inXtron is developing Zero-Touch Service Technology (ST) for NAS and home servers. Zero-Touch ST is a platform that inXtron is implementing to remotely monitor, manage, maintain, service, and update NAS devices deployed in the field. A key to the Zero-Touch ST is the embedding of an ACS/TR-069 agent into their NAS. This TR-069 agent insures all NAS devices are based on the same protocol and can be remotely managed. In doing so, inXtron is able to utilize their existing servers, infrastructure and the internet to create a completely automated Zero-Touch ST device management solution.

Not only does this solution provide a device management solution, it also greatly simplifies tech support through the automated gathering of detailed information directly from the device. Any problems with the device can be assessed and dealt remotely and clients and users no longer need to supply technical information they are not familiar with. Although it is great for gathering information about the device inXtron has been careful not to infringe the user’s privacy; they have taken extra care to and precautions to make sure that the Zero-Touch ST is only for monitoring and management of the device.

Tommy Chen, inXtron CEO, says he is developing the Zero-Touch ST to provide "a completely hands-off approach to device management. Our backend solution enables OEMs to constantly monitor and automatically update their NAS products with latest software releases. On the flipside, consumers are able to instantly have access to the latest NAS technologies." The result is an overall lowered cost to OEMs and increased user satisfaction.
