How does the Hydra Super-S Combo RAID controller determine a drive failure?

The RAID controller of the Hydra Super-S Combo does a CRC check during the file transfer to verify the data integrity. If a bit error occurs, which normally happens every few hours, the RAID controller will attempt to recover the data (e.g. resend the data from the source or recover from the RAID). This is considered a transient error and will be logged.

If the error occurs 3 times in succession, the disk is considered defective and the RAID array degraded. It will then ignore the failed hard drive and only make use of the good one(s) left.
